Plant of the Week

Raspberries

Raspberries are a delicious deciduous berry, with perennial roots and biennial canes. They can be prickly and need to be tamed.

Care and Growing:
Raspberries are best planted in their own garden zone, as they like to spread their underground roots and pop up in pathways and other surrounding spaces. Plant them 2-3 feet apart in well drained soil and tuck them in with compost, or mulch. Provide a support system such as fence posts with wire running between so they can be kept growing upright which will make for an easier harvest. A late winter pruning and perhaps a dose of liquid fertilizer in early spring is all they need to get growing.

Characteristics:
Red, golden and black raspberries are all delicious. Some varieties are summer bearing, and some are ever bearing producing fruit well into fall.
